Since the early part of the 20th century, mutant strains of white grapefruit have appeared with pink to slightly reddish color, and have been propagated by citriculturists into several strains of grapefruit that are now best known as the Ruby Red. Folks all over the world know that the Rio Grande Valley of Texas is the unique place where sunshine, warm Gulf 
breezes, temperature, and humidity combine into an ideal climatic setting where the finest and sweetest grapefruit on earth are produced.
In the late 1950's, Dr. Richard Hensz worked with budwood from the Ruby strains and began to develop an even darker red grapefruit with increased qualitiis of taste and appearence that became known as the Rio Red and is famous world wide.
